Biography

Timothy (Tim) Sax is a Vedic astrologer (Jyotishi), yogi, and software engineer. His decades-long practice and study of Yoga and Vedanta under the instruction of his spiritual guides, Swami Chandrashekharanand Saraswati and Joan Shivarpita Harrigan, which commenced in 1998, provide a solid dharmic foundation upon which to base his Jyotish practice.

Though he has long held an interest in astrology, it took many years for it to materialize. When he first met Swamiji at the age of 23, he wanted to become a monk. Swamiji accepted him as his pupil, but strongly advised that (due to his karma) he cannot be a monk and must build a life in the world, and that later (in his 40s), he could study the esoteric sciences such as astrology and Ayurveda, which he so desired. He learned that in the Vedic culture, householders (laypeople) can reach spiritual heights without limitation, just as monks can, albeit while living in the world. So he went to engineering school, obtaining a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, and in 2004 established his physical life as a software engineer. He continued to cultivate his spiritual life under Swamiji's direction, while living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area, earning a master's degree in engineering and marrying along the way. From 2017 to 2025, he worked almost exclusively on medical device software, based on his increasing desire to benefit humanity. But ultimately this could not satisfy his inner desire to connect with people one-on-one in a way that could improve the inner quality of people’s lives.

In 2022 he began to study Vedic astrology and met his Jyotish teacher, Robert Koch, with whom he continues his training/studies. While at first a strong inner urging, it has developed into a dedicated practice of service.

Timothy's approach is to apply Jyotish for dharmic, higher purposes (to benefit the soul on its path to spiritual liberation). His background in spiritual life enables the discernment to identify such higher purposes and the intuition to recognize what is important in a chart, while his engineering background allows him to grasp the technical aspects of the vast subject of Jyotish. 

In his early twenties, Timothy had studied music composition for three years at a university and Indian classical music in the U.S. and India. He has traveled to India three times, including a semester in Northern India studying Indian culture and the Hindi language (which he also studied previously in the USA.).   When not absorbed in his Jyotish practice, he enjoys playing his flutes (Indian bansuri, Irish flutes/whistles, and Native American style flutes), cooking Ayurvedic food, meditation, spiritual study, and time in nature and with family.

Timothy is also an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church.
